What do you call the end pieces of the Bread Loaf?
That is the question I saw scroll across my feed one day. As I read through the comments I was shocked by how many people commented ‘Garbage’ or ‘Trash’
I mean I just had no idea that other people didn’t find a way to use up these scraps. That’s a lot of money to waste by throwing away every end piece of bread! At least in my house it would be, we tend to go through a lot of bread.
I have found that my go to way to use those bread ends is by turning them into Homemade breadcrumbs. I never have to buy breadcrumbs from the store, and they are so easy to do it really takes not much extra time to do.
Drying your bread
So your first step to making your breadcrumbs is drying your bread. You have a couple of options when it comes to this step but the easiest one is to just lay out your bread pieces on the counter and let them dry out for a couple of days. This is how I always dry my ends out, I just take them out as we finish off the bread and adds no extra steps to my morning routine! -Lets face it I usually run out of bread making toast for breakfast or lunches around here! I just let them dry for the day on the one side then the next morning I will flip them over, let them dry for another day. You want to ensure they are fully dried and have no moisture left. If there is no moisture then you don’t need to worry they will not mold.
Once your bread is dried out you can save them in an airtight bag until you gather enough slices to blend them up.
Crumbling your dried bread
The next step is easy, you get your bag of dried bread and put a few slices at a time into your food processor and blend it up. This only takes a few seconds and, you can determine how fine you want to make your breadcrumbs.
Once you have all your bread crumbled up your breadcrumbs are ready to use. Store your homemade breadcrumbs in an airtight container until you are ready to use them.
Using your breadcrumbs
Homemade Breadcrumbs are perfect for using to mix into meatballs or hamburgers. Using for breading on chicken – homemade chicken fingers, homemade shake & bake chicken and Chicken Parmesan. Or use as crunchy crumble topping on casseroles.
I like adding some Italian Seasoning to some of my breadcrumbs as I make it. I then have Herbed Breadcrumbs ready for when I am making dinner.
Hope you all enjoy!
