When starting to eat healthier, cleaner foods I knew one of the first things I could switch up was our condiments as they often have a lot of extra sugars and additives. I absolutely love BBQ sauce and we love to BBQ all year round so we tend to go through a bit of BBQ sauce in this house. So I searched recipes and found a great base to create my Homemade BBQ Sauce Recipe.
Most recipes I found all had ketchup as one of the main ingredients, which kind of defeated the purpose as ketchup has a lot of sugar in it itself. So instead of ketchup, I went with tomato sauce it cuts out some of those added sugars. Using raw cane sugar also cuts down on some of the refined sugars in this sauce. However, if you wish you can easily substitute brown sugar for the cane sugar – just substitute with an equal amount of brown sugar.
This BBQ sauce is great on so many different kinds of meats. I have used it as the sauce while grilling Chicken breasts or Legs, Beef, Pork chops, even Kebobs. It’s great for making slow cooker pork chops, or pulled pork. I even use BBQ sauce sometimes while mixing up my Burgers, it adds that smokey flavor right through the burger. I also like using BBQ sauce as a dip for Homemade Chicken Fingers – Like I said I love BBQ sauce and will find any excuse to use it! Lol
Since I have started making homemade BBQ sauce I like to make sure we always have a bottle in the fridge – I will do up a big batch all at once often doubling the recipe that way we always have some ready to pull out anytime we are ready to grill – which in the summertime is most nights. One thing to know though is that if you do double the recipe it will take some extra time to reduce.
A great way to change up the flavor of this sauce just a bit is to add liquid smoke. 1-2 tsp of liquid smoke, while it is simmering, will add excellent flavor to your sauce. You can find all different kinds so you can change up the flavor and find your favorite. You can find liquid smoke in some of your major grocery stores or check out your outdoor supply store they usually have some near the smokers.

Homemade BBQ Sauce
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup raw cane sugar
- 1/2 cup vinegar
- 1/4 cup lemon juice
- 1/2 cup worcestershire sauce
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp dry mustard
- 1-2 tsp liquid smoke (optional)
- Combine all ingredients in sauce pan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium but continue to keep a light boil to blend flavors and reduce sauce to desired thickness. Sauce will thicken as it cools. May take approx 30-60 min to reduce.
- If you want to make sauce thicken faster, you may thicken with a bit of cornstarch. combine 2 Tbs cornstarch with 2 Tbsp water and mix into pasty water. Stir into sauce to thicken.
